Listeriosis is a serious, but treatable and preventable disease caused by the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes and is widely distributed in nature and can be found in soil, water and vegetation. Furthermore, animal products and fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables can be contaminated from these sources. Unfortunately the South Africa listeria outbreak that has killed 180 people since January is the largest that has ever been recorded globally, as reported by the World Health Organization. As such we have included a Food Safety 101 guide on preventing the spread of the disease. Please share this information and help others to prevent the spread of Listeriosis.
